Following last year, Angkor Songkran was arranged again this year (2014) in Siem Reap, Cambodia, and even bigger. Khmer New Year is usually celebrated in mid-April every year due to the reason that this time in the past, Khmer people (prefer to farmers) freed themselves out of their harvesting season, so they picked the time to celebrate new year event; and this year it was on 14-16 of April.
Angkor Songkran Event – Angkor Wat to Elephant Terrace
This event did attract so many tourists both national and international to gather and experience Angkor Songkran mainly Khmer New Year celebration at ancient city of Cambodia. The event took place at Angkor area starting from Angkor Wat temple to Elephant Terrace during 13-16 of April. Things shown include Khmer traditional dance and popular games during new year, Bokator (ល្បុក្កតោ) Cambodian martial art, concert, Khmer shows, Khmer product exhibition especially នំអន្សមយក្ស (giant sticky rice cake).
My original plan was going on holiday with my family, but then my friends also went there, so I joined them in the last few days. The day we decided to visit Angkor Songkran event was the day we walked through the crowds and got lost looking for the giant sticky rice cake since we did not know where it was placed.
Pub Street at night
Because it was the special event of the year, there were so many tourists visiting Siem Reap, and every nights during the event, the most crowded area is Pub Street. Concert, dancing, water and beer splashing, powder playing and any fun activities were lived up by the participants and tourists, making Pub Street going wild whole night. My friends and I could barely get a place for dinner, fortunately, we could get one of the best spots at a restaurant’s balcony on the 1st floor to enjoy dinner while being safe from the crowd (not dangerous though, yet we did not want to have a bath again because of powder and beer spreading all over the place, hehe), and feeling excited watching them playing at the ground.
Angkor Songkran is the biggest Khmer New Year event so far, organized in the ancient city of Angkor, Siem Reap. I wonder what will come next for new year in 2015. Patiently waiting and hope you guys join it too 🙂
